Abstract
With improvement in treatment and survival of cancer patients, neurological complications of systemic cancer have become more important in incidence, treatment plan, and quality of life. Modern imaging technologies improved their diagnosis, but their recognition requires clinical suspicion and knowledges of the manifestation. We retrospectively reviewed 81 cases of spinal metastases with neurological manifestations seen at the Departments of Neurology and Therapeutic radiology between 1990 and 1992 to characterize neurological manifestations, type of primary tumors, location of lesion, and results of treatments. The most common site of primary tumors producing spinal metastases were lung, stomach, liver, and breast in decreasing order. Thoracic region was involved in 68% of the cases. Pain was the most common initial presenting symptom. Less neurological deficit by early diagnosis resulted in a favorable outcome.
