- Acute aseptic meningitis is a rare complication of herpes zoster. It is usually regarded as a complication of the cutaneous infection in patients with impaired cellular immunity. Herpes zoster virus is a rare cause of viral meningitis. In one of three patients with herpes zoster meningitis, varicella-zoster virus DNA was detected by the polymerase chain reaction in the cerebrospinal fluid.
