Abstract
Eighty four stroke patients with varying degree of hemiparesis were studied by magnetic motor evoked potentials (MEP). The diagnosis was made clinically and radiologically. MEP was used to assess the degree of functional recovery after stroke prospectively. Staging motor impairment at the time of MEP and on follow-up day was carried out as a parameter of functional deficit. The results of MEP and the initial functional deficit were closely associated with the functional recovery (p<0.001). And MEP had the ability in predicting functional outcome (P<0.05) in patients with similar severe degree of weakness. We conclude that MEP in association with clinical assessment is a useful tool in predicting functional recovery after stroke.
