Abstract
Visual (VEP), brainstem auditory (BAEP), and median nerve somatosensory (MNSEP) evoked potentials were studied in 18 patients with primary cerebellar ataxia, and were found to be abnormal in 30%, 17%, and 33% respectively among the tested patients. When related to the patients' various clinical features, they were more often abnormal when the patients had signs of extra-cerebellar involvement such as spasticity and saccadic eye movement failure. Factors such as age, sex, inheritance pattern, degree of ataxia, and presence of bladder symptoms were not related to the frequency of the abnormality. Therefore, we concluded that evoked potential studies could be a useful tool in defining the extent of the degenerative cerebellar discase."
