Follow-up Study of Brain MRI and Clinical Course in Patients with Wilson's Disease

Abstract
We studied 16 patients with neurologically symptomatic Wilson's disease(WD) before and after D-penicillamine therapy by using brain MRI and functional disabi!ity score over the mean follow up penod of 12 months. The most common abnormal findings on pre-treatment MRIs were high signal intensity(HIS) lesions located in the thalami(100%) and brain atrophy( 100%). HIS lesions usually improved on the follow-up MRIs in accordance with the clinical improvement. HIS lesions in the thalami improved more rapidly and more extensively than those in the basal ganglia. Low signal intensity(LSI) lesions were located mostly in the basal ganglia. And did not show any proportional changes on the follow-up MRIs.
